How are electric trikes improving senior independence? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today we're going to talk about how electric trikes are improving senior independence. All right, I've got three great electric trikes here for seniors. It's our Simple Glide and our Relax Body. Now, let's talk about electric trikes and the impact they're having on senior independence. Electric trikes have grown in popularity over the last six years. COVID, obviously, boosted the electric bike and trike industry, and now they've become a mainstay of U.S. culture and are still growing. And e-trikes have, really, really had an impact on the senior community. Now, many seniors who might have resorted to a mobility scooter can opt for an electric tricycle and still get some exercise while also utilizing this as a personal activity. Mobility device.
In addition to that, e-trikes can go much faster than the mobility scooters that many seniors were and currently still are riding around. Now, we're talking about an electric trike, some models with the capability of going up to 20 miles an hour versus the mobility scooters, most likely going up to three, sometimes five miles an hour, so there's a big difference. And what that's doing is it's allowing more seniors to get out of their homes, to go run errands, and to do the things that they once did that possibly they thought they could no longer do. Now we're in San Clemente, I get a lot of test riders here, and commonly we get people coming to look at e-trikes because they're no longer driving a car. And it could be for many reasons. Maybe they've had spinal surgery, or they've lost something feeling in their leg, they can't push the gas pedal, or possibly they've just gotten older and they don't feel safe behind the wheel of a car anymore. And I've had many riders who haven't driven for several years and are excited to come in and check out Electric Trikes because now they can finally feel self-sufficient, go run their errands, and go pick up their dry cleaning. I had a gentleman come, who was the number one thing he was most excited about, riding down to get his dry cleaning on his electric trike. So, that's why and how e-trikes are bringing independence back to the senior community.
You can get out, go to the senior center, and connect with other people. They say isolation is one of the number one causes that leads to depression. And oftentimes, many people over the age of 70 lose their mobility. They can't get out, connect with friends, or do the things they once did, and unfortunately, it leads to poor mental health. So e-trikes can be one small element to help rectify that and get seniors out of their homes. If you're someone who's lost their license, or maybe you also can't ride a two-wheel bike anymore, the great thing about electric tricycles is that with the motor assistance now, it's easy to pedal, right? Old school trikes that don't have assistance they're a little more cumbersome, and they're heavy. It's not something you would want to make a four-, five, or six-mile trip on. But now with an e-trike, you get that assistance. And the other thing is you don't have to pedal at all if you don't want to. You can utilize the throttles that come with it. They often have either a twist throttle or a throttle you press with your thumb. And once you engage that throttle, the trike will go without you pedaling at all, so it makes it possible to take your e-trike 10 to 20 miles.
And with the technology of the batteries, you can get the range to go up to 50 miles, depending on your weight, and also how you use the electric. Now, the weight of the rider will dictate the range, but you can always buy an extra battery, or there are double-battery tricycle options as well. You don't have to worry about tipping, they're easy to steer. So you can get out, be independent, and go do the things you once did. And the other cool thing is that as many towns are popping up with protected bike lanes now, you can also take trails. And the beauty of the trike, like I said, is not only does it give you the independence back, but it can also give you the ability to exercise, to move your legs, to be out in the sunshine, to get that vitamin D. It is such a great thing. If you are somebody that recently could no longer ride a two-wheel bike or you recently can't drive anymore and you're looking for ways to get out, maybe you do have a mobility scooter and you're not happy with how far it can take you or how fast you can go, definitely consider an electric trike because it'll invigorate your life and allow you to get out and like I said, enjoy those activities that you love doing so much.
