What to Know About an Electric Cruiser Bike

There are several key features of an electric cruiser bike including the motor, battery, tires, seat, lcd display, brakes, and the frame.  These features can vary from model to model and it’s important to find the perfect combination of these specs to fit your body.  The best aspect of cruiser ebikes is that they are very customizable and can be adjusted to fit a specific riders needs.  We will describe all of the features to look for so you can find the best electric cruiser bike for you. 

Electric Beach Cruiser Motor

The motor size on a cruiser ebike can come in usually three different sizes, either a 250, 500 or 750 watt.  Anything larger than 750 watts would not be street legal in the United States.  The size of the motor you’ll need depends on both the rider’s weight and also the type of terrain you’ll be riding on.  While the smallest of the motors a 250 watt is a great option if you plan to do primarily flat ground riding.  Also, if you don’t feel safe having a large e bike motor on your bike 250 watt is a perfect way to get into ebike riding without the risk of a too powerful motor.  If you are also 160lbs or less 250 watts will be enough power for you to ride up most hills.  We also generally recommend 250 watt ebikes to seniors.  With less power they are more safe and reduce the risk of accidents.  Riders will be able to cruise at a top speed of 16mph by just using the throttle and 18mph using pedal assist.    

If you are over 160lbs and/or plan to ride up a lot of hills then you’ll want to consider a 500 watt electric cruiser bike.  500 watt cruisers will be enough power to get riders up to 250lbs up hills and around town.  The initial surge produced from a 500 watt electric bike will be more substantial compared to a 250 watt.  The additional power of this size electric bicycle is substantial and can make hills much easier.  Cruising at speeds of 20mph will be easy and you can even achieve a top speed of 28 miles per hour when using pedal assist.

The largest of the three electric cruiser motor sizes, a 750 watt is a lot of power.  They will tackle hills no problem for riders up to 350lbs.  If you like fast acceleration and plan to climb a lot of hills this e bike motor size is perfect for you.  With the throttle you’ll achieve a top speed of 20 miles per hour and when using pedal assist you’ll achieve top speeds of 28 miles per hour.  This motor size isn’t for everyone though, it will be the most costly and provides the biggest surge when the motor kicks in.  Make sure the cost of a 750 watt electric cruiser aligns with your budget and speed requirements.

Electric Cruiser Bike Battery

The battery size on electric cruiser bikes can vary greatly.  The larger the battery the more expensive the e bike cruiser will be.  It’s important to consider how far you’ll want to ride on your outings so you can align your battery size with how much you want to spend on your ebike.  Otherwise you’ll end up paying for an electric bike battery that you may not need.

Electric bike batteries are measured in amp hours and volts and when multiplied together it equals watt hours.  E bike batteries on the small side will be six amp hours and on the large side can be 21 ah.  There are even cruiser ebikes that have two batteries to extend the range.  For rides less than 20 miles a 10.4 amp hour battery or less should give you enough range.  If you plan to ride over 20 miles on a single ride then you’ll want to look at least a 14 amp hour battery.  If you plan to ride well over 20 miles on a single ride and also there are lots of hills on your rides then you’ll want to consider a very large e bike battery of 21 amp hours.

The other aspect to consider is the rider’s weight.  The heavier the rider the quicker the battery on your cruiser will drain because it will require the motor to work harder to propel the rider.  If you are 250lbs or heavier than you’ll want to consider a battery of 14 amp hours or more.  Only if you plan to do primarily flat ground riding can a 250lb plus rider consider a 10 amp hour battery.  

There’s always the option of purchasing an electric bicycle with a smaller battery to save money on the initial purchase price of the ebike.  Then if you start taking longer riders that require more battery range you can purchase a second battery to take with you on rides.  It’s pretty easy to take a second battery on trip, just find a good bag that can mount to your bike to carry your extra lithium ion battery in.

E-Bike Cruiser Bicycle Display

Displays on electric bicycles come in different shapes and sizes and mounting locations.  On cruiser bikes, the are usually either mounting in the center of the handlebars or by the grips.  LCD Displays don’t dictate the performance of an beach cruiser ebike but they provide digital readouts showing the battery life, miles ridden and miles per hour.  Most displays will show the same info but there are larger displays and smaller displays.  It depends if you want a larger more noticeable lcd display or you prefer something smaller and more sleek.  If you like your cruiser bike to look less like an electric bike then go smaller, if you like the larger display to may be easier to read, then go big.

Beach Cruiser Bike Electric Bike Tires 

Cruiser bicycles with electric motors tend to have 26” tires but the widths of the tire usually come in a few different sizes.  Common tire widths are 2.125”, 3” or 4”.  The different tire widths on electric beach cruisers have different benefits.  4” wide tires on e bikes are great for off road riding because the extra width allows the tires to roll easily over bumpy terrain and obstacles.  They also do provide a lot of cushioning making for a very soft ride.  The downside of very wide tires on ebikes is they can drain the battery quicker and they may be a bit harder to steer.  If you prefer to use your electric bicycle occasionally without electric assist or in very low pedal assist level it may be difficult to pedal a fat tire electric beach cruiser.  But if you prefer to always be in the highest level of pedal assist or use the throttle then the fat tires shouldn’t be an issue.  

2.125” tires are a good size tire for electric cruiser bikes because while they do have some width, they aren’t overly large making them difficult to pedal.  This size tire will still absorb a lot of the bumps of the road and will be less of drain on your lithium ion battery.  Riding without the electric assist will be no problem and this tire size won’t drain your bikes battery at a faster pace than normal.

26” diameter tires are really ideal for beach cruiser bikes because they roll smooth and also give the bike that classic cruiser look.  You’ll find a good balance of cushiness and performance with this tire size on your ebike.

Cruiser Bicycle Seat

 E-Bike Brakes

 Having great brakes on an e bike is obviously very important.  Riders need to be able to stop very quickly because electric bikes travel at very fast speeds.  Disc brakes are the best type of brakes for an electric beach cruiser bike.  Disc brakes have calipers that are located on a rotor.  There are levers on the right and left side of the handlebars.  When the levers are compressed with your hands the calipers clamp down on the rotor stopping the bike.  Having the caliper located on the rotor provides more stopping power versus having the brake pads contact the rim.  There are a few important things to know about disc brakes on an electric cruiser bike.

Disc brake pads can wear down relatively frequently.  As the pads wear down the brakes will become less responsive.  As a result it will be necessary to adjust your e bike brakes as the pads wear down.  This is an adjustment that can be learned and done at home.  It will require moving the pads closer to the rotor as the pads wear down.  Most disc brake calipers have a bolt that can be screwed in to move the pads closer to the rotor and can be loosened to move the pads farther away from the rotor.  It is a simple adjustment but it is important to check your brakes and adjust them as needed.  

If the pads are completely worn down and the brakes can no longer be adjusted to provide proper braking power, the pads will need to be replaced.  This is a simple and inexpensive process.  The brake pads can be purchased at a bike shop online and they can easily install into the calipers.  Make sure to check your brakes and ensure you always have great stopping power.  

Electric Cruiser Bike Frame & Riding Position
