How to ride an electric tricycle uphill. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today I'm going to show you how to ride an electric tricycle uphill. All right, so I'm sitting on the e-bike Rickshaw from sixthreezero. You can take passengers on the back. I'm gonna show you how to ride an electric tricycle uphill. What I'm gonna teach you is going to be applicable to any e-trike. Doesn't matter if you're on a Rickshaw, what have you. I'll just give you some tips and tricks on how to utilize the assistance in the best scenarios to get you up hills easiest. So let's go over to the hill. All right, so we're at an intersection. Our hill is right here. You can see there's, you know, a decline this way. So we're about just a little bit up into the hill. Now, if you're starting on any hill, the benefit is to build some momentum before you hit your hill. So that's the goal. The other thing I've done in preparation is I've shifted my gears down to number one. One's always going to be the easiest to pedal. Now, if you don't have gears on your trike, you can only have one choice. But I put it into one in advance of climbing the hill, so it'll be easiest to pedal up the hill.
Now, we do have a thumb throttle on this e-trike. Depending on how big of a motor you have and how light your e-trike is, you could just use the throttle the whole way. But... For me, I'm going to utilize a pedal assist because the throttle is just going to get me up too slowly. Well, not too slow, but I want to try to get up a little faster. So, now the other thing is your assistance level right here. I'm going to go ahead and put it into five. My goal is going to get as much speed before I hit this hill to carry my momentum up as far as I can and just make it as easy as possible on my legs. So, we're all set. I'm going to wait for traffic to clear. I'm just going to use the throttle to get me going a little bit here. And then I'm going to come into the curve here. All right. Now, again, let's get a little momentum. So when I entered the hill, I got a little momentum going. And from here, I'm in first gear. And honestly, very relaxed, easy. Now, again, I'm 230 pounds. So the throttle for me is just a little too slow up the hill. It can get me up the hill. Ran over a pine cone. If you're lighter, you could very well do throttle only. Now with that said, if you go throttle only up a hill, you're gonna drain the battery pretty significantly. So something to think about. And if you can do it lower than five, let's say three, now you see I slow down quite a bit. Back up to five. Gives me a nice little boost. So the higher the level of assistance, the easier to get up, but you're gonna drain that battery a little bit more. Now, once I get to this flat ground portion, I can accelerate.
And that was easy peasy. So the choice is yours on how you approach a hill. But if you wanna keep pedaling, put it into level five, put your gear in level one, that's gonna be the easiest on you. Now again, if you can utilize the throttle, go for it. I don't recommend it all the time though, not because of the speed, but because of the battery drain.
