The Best Heavy-Duty E-Trikes for Big Riders and Big Loads: High-Weight Capacity Electric Trikes

Electric tricycles with high weight capacity.

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today I'm going to show you some electric tricycles with high weight capacity. All right, I've got five of sixthreezero e-trikes right here. Now let's say you are a rider looking for an electric trike and you want something with a high weight capacity, either because of your weight or maybe you want to carry multiple things on your e-trike, like a lot of cargo or possibly an animal with you. So you're looking for something that can handle weight over 300 pounds. Now, I would really deem a high weight capacity of over 300 pounds because most manufacturers will approve their trikes for up to 300 pounds. When you get into 350 or 400 pounds, there are not a lot of options out there. So if you are looking for an electric trike with highway capacity, a couple of things I wanna touch on.

Number one, the motor size is really up to you. It's going to depend on the type of hills you're gonna take on. Mostly flat ground riding, I would say a 750-watt motor will do just fine. You could also use a 500-watt motor or even a 250-watt motor, to be honest with you, if you're only on flat ground. Now, if you're introducing hills, the legal limit here in California on motors is 750 watts. Some states have a thousand watts. If you are gonna do really severe inclines, you definitely wanna be at a 750-watt. Maybe even 1,000 watts if you can, again, pass it in your state. Now, the other thing is if you're going to ride off-road, then you could look at limitless motor options, and I would go for the biggest possible if budget is not an option. Now, I'm 230 pounds, and when I take on hills with a 750-watt motor, it's not like you can just press the throttle and go.

And I think it's important to set that expectation for any rider above 300 pounds or anyone who plans to carry more than 300 pounds, you're not going to press the throttle and cruise up a hill. Most likely, you won't even be able to utilize the throttle up hills because it won't give enough power. But if you use the pedal assist at the highest level, it will get you up hills. But again, you're not going to fly up the hill. This is not a car or even an electric golf cart. It is meant to be ridden. And there are regulations around what classifies it as a bicycle or a tricycle. So that's just really important to remember. Now, the other concern, obviously, is you want something that's going to support your weight, right? So you want it to be built sturdy. Typically, when you're talking about riders north of 300 pounds, I'd say a couple of the big concerns are the seat and also the spokes of the wheels. So other things can alleviate the pressure on the spokes, and that is a good geometry, right? A dispersed frame, so there's not as much downward pressure on the wheels.

A longer frame, as I said, will distribute the weight a little better. Then you won't have to worry about the wheels as much. So, some features you might want to look for are heavier gauge spokes, also fatter tires. Okay, so let's get into some of the e-trikes that have a high weight capacity and are good for either heavier riders or heavier loads. So starting over here with our Rickshaw, this has a capacity of 500 pounds, and this is built to carry passengers, and it also can be built just for a single heavy rider. Now comes with the four-inch wide tires, and also has a very beefy frame that can support heavy weight. The rear subframe is double-welded and has double supports in the back, again, to handle that weight. Now, it is a little bit bigger of a trike. It's a 750-watt front hub motor. You can also get the 1,000-watt mid-drive motor as well. Comes with hydraulic disc brakes. So this is good for not only a single rider, like I said, but passengers as well. But it is a little bit of a bigger item.

You have hydraulic disc brakes also. Now moving over to the EZ Transit here, this is a smaller, more compact trike. This is gonna have a weight capacity of 350 pounds. And the reason it has that north of 300 pounds is by adding these four-inch wide tires, we're absorbing the shocks, the bumps of trails, off-road, and even the pavement to accommodate a heavier rider. So this has a 750-watt motor. Again, throttle or pedal assist, you choose. This has mechanical disc brakes. This is a great little around-the-town city rider. It's got great storage in the front and the rear as well. And so again, that will support up to 350 pounds. All right, now moving over here to the Simple Glides. These are two unique recumbent e-trikes with this office chair-style seat. This seat can accommodate riders up to 400 pounds. We rate the overall weight at 350 pounds. Because of the performance element, but if you're gonna do primarily flat ground riding, this will be just fine for up to 400 pounds. Now, for heavier riders, I would recommend the fat tire version. Again, for the same reason, you've got those four-inch-wide tires to cushion the ride. Also, add more protection and shock absorption between the tire rim and the spokes. Now, the cool thing, again, this is a longer frame, so you have the weight dispersing throughout, so it's not the weight in a more compact space coming down on the frame of the bike. Also, the seat is built on a platform. So it's very sturdy. It can support a lot of weight.

That is much different than a seat that is just supported by a single post. So this is part of the welded frame with a platform, which makes the seat ultra, ultra-sturdy. Now, this is a 750-watt version. This is a 500-watt version. Again, if you're doing flat ground, 500 will be fine. If you've got some hills to climb, 750 is a great option. All right, now moving over here to the last one, the Relaxed body. This has got a 750-watt rear-mounted motor. Again, it's got that longer frame and three-inch wide tires to support heavier riders. This is up to 350 pounds for this model. You've got the throttle, the pedal assist, and the three-inch wide tires, again, add that shock absorption. Now, again, this is a seat post seat. So if you are 350 pounds, just know you can only put a seat on here that can go into the seat post. We have our optional extra-large Max Cush seat here with the backrest. So again, a longer frame disperses the weight, making it safe and comfortable for heavier riders. So these are some great options, some e-trikes with high weight capacity. The other thing I want to add is that if you're looking to bring cargo, the relaxed body has a great storage basket in the back. The Simple Glides have the front basket. In the rickshaw, you can swap the rear seat for a basket as well. So if you want to trade that capacity for passengers for cargo, you can do that.
