Will I crash my e-bike? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today I'm gonna answer the question, will I crash my e-bike? All right, both these e-bikes, these are two of the safest e-bikes with this low step-through for easy mounting and dismounting. Let's say you're doing some research and you're interested in e-bikes and maybe you're scared of crashing and they terrify you and you're wondering, gosh, will I crash my e-bike? Am I going to get hurt? Well, let's answer that question. So, obviously, like anything in life, there's risk in anything we do. Stepping out onto the street, there's risk, right? Getting on airplanes, going to the store, whatever you may do comes with inherent risk. Now, many e-bike crashes, in my opinion, are rider errors, which is true of obvious cars, but the key to not crashing your e-bike is number one, be educated, and number two, practice. A lot of people, I think, get onto e-bikes and they don't know what they're doing or they don't get comfortable with it and they get overconfident, which is another piece of it is overconfidence. As long as you respect the e-bike, respect what it can do, no, you will not crash your e-bike. But as soon as people start getting overconfident and pushing the boundaries and pushing the limits of what they should do on their electric bikes, accidents do occur.
There are also many safety precautions you can take to ensure that you won't crash. Little things like when you're mounting and dismounting, make sure the motor is off. When you come to a stop, turn your pedal assist down to zero. Be careful when stopping on a hill with your electric bike. Braking appropriately and obeying the rules of the road is another big one. I see a lot of e-bike riders who don't properly obey the rules of the road. Whether they're younger and they don't know the rules of the road or someone just likes to get aggressive and push the limits of what they can do on an e-bike. Quite honestly, I will say e-bikes are a great mode of transportation and they're pretty zippy depending on what motor size you get. So a lot of people start pushing the limits of where they go, they zig, they zag. Maybe they don't obey traffic lights. All of these things are gonna add inherent risk. So if you take the time get educated, and get to know your e-bike and the controls. No, you will not crash. Now, I can't tell you and guarantee you that, but when I see a lot of accidents that occur, I do believe it's rider error because they were impatient or they didn't follow proper protocols when riding. And the things that I just listed off, number one is to turn the motor on and off when you're getting on and off the e-bike. And also be aware if you have a throttle on your e-bike.
How to use that properly and where it is, whether it's a twist throttle or a thumb throttle. And also just get used to that assistance. Practice in a parking lot in a wide open space before you start taking to the streets. As you get more comfortable, you'll feel safer and you'll be able to ride safer and know you won't crash. Knock on wood, I've been riding e-bikes now for five years. I've never crashed. I always wear my helmet. I always take precautions. I also had my motorcycle license proper, which I do think was a good foundation because a motorcyclist, you learn to always be on the lookout and be alert. The same is true for e-bikes. Always be on the lookout. Always be alert. You've got to pay attention to everyone else. Don't expect that they're going to see you. And trust me, if you can do that, you'll stay safe out there.
